ISID is a local chapter of
the Society for International Development (SID). Created in 1957,
SID is a unique global network of individuals and institutions concerned
with development that is participatory, pluralistic and sustainable.
SID has about 3,000 individual members in 125 countries, 55 institutional
members and 65 local chapters. It is an international, non-governmental
organization whose purpose is to promote a new approach to social
justice and a continuing dialogue on the basis of the basic values
of equality, respect for diversity and dialogue. On the basis of
these values SID has three-fold purpose:

• To support development innovation at all levels - local, national, and global - in order to contribute to the search for solutions to the problems of poverty, injustice gender inequality and lack of sustainability. |

• To encourage, support and facilitate the creation of a sense of community amongst individuals and organizations committed to social justice at the local, national regional and international levels. |
|
• To promote dialogue, understanding and co-operation for social and economic development that furthers the wellbeing of all peoples. |
Based in one of the major metropolitan areas in the Midwestern
United States, the ILLINOIS SOCIETY FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
(ISID) utilizes the resources of the diverse communities of the
State of Illinois to promote international development, and is committed
to five principal objectives:

1. To stimulate dialogue, understanding, and cooperation on global development issues;
2. To enhance skills, knowledge, and collaboration among development practitioners;
3. To provide a network for individuals and organizations working in various sectors of international development;
4. To serve as a resource for the general public of Illinois regarding international development issues, including issues that affect the lives of those residing in this region;
5. To support innovation and best practices in international development.
